The trainings were a chance to gain valuable knowledge on techniques for building a strong and creative team, as well as the challenges of startups. • The finale of the project titled Climathon Krakow 2018 – the event took place on October 26-27, 2018. This year we met at the Museum of Urban Engineering at ul. Św. Wawrzyńca 15 in Krakow.

Climathon is a 24-hour international event encouraging everyone in the world to take action to protect the climate. Activities from the areas of new technologies and creative fields were promoted. Participants developed pro-climate concepts and created innovative solutions to local climate change problems. This year’s Climathon produced 10 new projects for climate protection. About 50 participants took part in the event.

The main prize of Climathon Krakow 2018 was PLN 4 000. Additional prizes in kind included vouchers for books by Marcin Popkiewicz, tickets to the Open Eyes Economy Summit, relaxing sessions at the Krakow Salt Cave, and gifts from the Aeris Futuro Foundation and Krakow City Hall.

The winner of this year’s Climathon was Waldemar Boczar, who created a project entitled “Ogrody deszczowe” (meaning “Rain Gardens”). The project aims to protect dwindling environmental resources in particular by retaining rainwater in the city through special installations. The author of the project wants to create a rain garden in Krakow, as well as an information brochure with instructions for building the garden and inviting residents to create such places.

Second place was awarded to “Szkoła na roślinach” (meaning: the “School on Plants”) project by Joanna Lotkowska and Marcin Tischner. The authors want to encourage schools to have children eat a plant-based lunch once a week. Such a switch in menus means a number of benefits, including: 78 fewer kg of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere per school, per 1 meal per week.

Third place went to the project entitled “Mandala Klimatyczna” by Piotr Więckowski, Artur Wieczorek, Łukasz Kowalczyk and Ignacy Januszek. It is an urban game to visit climate-friendly places in Krakow. The authors noticed that in Cracow there is a lack of cooperation and knowledge about who is doing what to protect the environment. Therefore, through their project they want to collect this knowledge and disseminate it in an attractive form.

The jury additionally singled out the project titled “Park Przyjaciół Człowieka” created by Liudmile Rudz, Alicja Wieczorek, Gabriela Dąbek and Grzegorz Spytkowski. This project is an interesting combination of the existing idea of the Park of Krakowians with the need to create a burial ground for animals in Krakow.

At Climathon Krakow 2018, we hosted many distinguished guests, including Mr. Prof. Dr. Piotr Skubała from the University of Silesia in Katowice, Ms. Agnieszka Górniak, head of the Małopolska Regional Development Observatory Team, Mr. Andrzej Łazęcki, deputy director of the Department of Municipal Economy of the City of Krakow, the Polish Youth Delegates to the UN, i.e. Klaudia Klonowska and Agata Krząstek.
