LET’S MAKE OUR GARDEN – report on the celebration of World Environment Day
2 days, 20 hours of work, almost 200 kids and more than 2 acres of reclaimed land, where more than 400 plants were planted – these are the results of the workshop held in Łętownia near Jordanów.
On June 6-7, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Regional Chamber in the center of Łętownia near the forester’s lodge, a workshop entitled ZRÓBMY SOBIE OGRÓD (meaning: LET’S MAKE OUR GARDEN) took place, which was organized by the Aeris Futuro Foundation in cooperation with the Living Workshop, the Sendzimir Foundation, the Village Council in Łętownia and the Jordanów Commune Office. The project was carried out with financial support from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
“And will these fruits be able to be harvested? That was the question from the mouth of one of the participants.” – Recounts Joanna Mieszkowicz, project coordinator and president of the Aeris Futuro Foundation. “To which, of course, I answered her that this is why we plant useful plants such as raspberries, currants, gooseberries and herbs, so that they can be used later. Similarly, bees and bumblebees will benefit from honey plants like flax, thyme, echinacea, among others.”
“Herbal nooks, flowery meadows, and elements of traditional wooden architecture are disappearing before our eyes.” – Joanna Mieszkowicz adds. “Communities are cutting themselves off from tradition, from what has always been in harmony with nature – these are sad conclusions, which is why I decided to implement a project that would bring the natural heritage of the region at least a little closer. Because can a person like a tree live without roots?”
The event was part of World Environment Day, which has been celebrated every June 5 since 1972. This year’s theme was “Connecting People to Nature.” We hope that through this action at least a little bit of this connectivity was repaired.
Thank you for your participation to the teachers and, above all, to the hard-working students of the School Complex in Łętownia and the kindergartners!
You are welcome to visit the Garden – we are planning more activities for early September.
